Enjoy reading about this epic adventure and don’t forget to donate!!
Purpose: A team of retirees, all combat veterans and all special operations, each with their own major medical issues which they have overcome, will hike the Great Smoky Mountains (20 - 30 September 2015) along the Appalachian Trail (AT) from Fontana Dam to Newfound Gap under sponsorship to assist Gold Star Family Members in paying some of their Higher Education Tuition Funding Costs.
1. To assist and support Gold Star Family Members with some of their Higher Education Tuition Funding Costs.
Their parents answered the call as Service Members to support and defend the constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic and paid the ultimate price with their lives for all American Citizens to enjoy the freedom and rights we have today!
2. To show solidity with all Veterans, Retirees and Combat Wounded Soldiers that they can still challenge themselves in any endeavor regardless of physical & mental injuries sustained in training or combat.
We all have limitations placed on us due to our medical, physical injuries and ages but our spirit to always push forward and overcome all obstacles is what makes us special. We are ARSOF Army Strong Retirees still striving to give 110% in all we do.
3. Four ARSOF retirees each with their own major medical surgeries/issues (Stage 4 Cancer Survivor, Major Back Surgery, Multiple Total Knee Replacements, a Heart Transplant, others to minor to list) they have survived and are still fighting today, but will hike together in the fall in the Great Smoky Mountains along the Appalachian Trail.
4. The scholarship fund is called the “Peter Andrew McKenna Scholarship Fund”, named after MSG P. Andrew McKenna, 7th SFG (A) soldier who was killed last month in Afghanistan. Mr. and Mrs. McKenna will be on hand in November at the presentation ceremony to give the fund to the Gold Star recipient.
